Located in both Herradura and Jaco there is both a public elementary and high school. At the public schools, all children wear a uniform. School goes from grade one to eleven and attendance up to the sixth grade is mandatory. The school year in Costa Rica runs from January to December and children enjoy a month holidays over Christmas and approxiametly six weeks in July and the first two weeks of August
If you would like to enroll your child in a Private school, there are two choices in the Herradura/Jaco area: Las Nubes and Falcon International.

Falcon International School is located on Herradura road just outside the gates of Los Suenos Resort. Falcon International follows the North American school calendar where children attend from September through to the end of June.
This private, bilingual elementary school opened a brand new facility in August 2006. Currently there are approx 50 elementary and pre-kinder aged children attending the school however the facility will also have buildings for high school aged children.

This state of the art private school is accredited in Costa Rica up to Grade Nine and have now opened a VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL for children in grades 10-12. The School is also working on gaining it's International Accreditation with SACS, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This will allow all students to enter post secondary schools with their Falcon transcripts and be readily accepted. The teacher to student ratio is also very low, approx 1:6 with a maximum of 1:15. Most subjects are conducted in english with the exception of Spanish, Art, Music class and Costa Rican social studies.

This is one of the most progressive and open private schools, open to parents' input and concerns. Cost per month is anywhere from $200-525 plus enrollment fees, though fees vary according to the age of the children, but please contact the school for up to date fees .

IC3 certification helps you learn and demonstrate Internet and digital literacy through a worldwide industry standard. FIS offers to the student the opportunity to become IC3 certified by preparing you to take each of the following three exams:
1. Computing Fundamentals (Hardware, Software & Operating Systems)
2. Key Applications (Common program functions, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation)

FIS offers introductory, intermediate and advanced Spanish conversational classes for individuals looking to develop their fluency in Spanish for personal or business reasons.
ENGLISH
Falcon International School is an authorized English Speaking Center (ESC) of the Universidad Latina providing evening English classes. Whether you want to learn English for personal reasons, job advancement or professional development, this course will fulfill your needs. As an employer you wish to have industry specific classes; the ESC of U Latina at Falcon can develop a program which will meet your needs.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Is FIS accredited by the Costa Rican Ministry of Education (MEP)
· Yes FIS is accredited by the MEP for Nursery through ninth grade
2. Are all classes at FIS taught in English
· No, FIS is a bi –lingual school which believes in the importance of having knowledge of both English and Spanish. All students receive classes of Costa Rican Social studies and Spanish classes in Spanish in adherence to the standards established by the MEP
3. Upon entering FIS is my son/daughter required to speak English fluently?
· No, FIS is a bi lingual school and very supportive all those young minds with the desire to learn. There is a new student orientation team to help those non Spanish (or non English) students to adapt as well as special after school language classes.
4. Are all the teachers qualified or do they just posses general degrees?
· All teaching staff is properly certified in the area they are teaching. In addition, as part of the pre hire interview process, the transcripts and resume of every potential candidate is sent to the central offices of SACS for review to ensure the potential teacher possesses the proper degrees.
5. What is the school year?
· FIS has chosen to use the International calendar of August until June. The reason is to be able to participate in many of the trainings, tests and college fairs offered internationally. It was also selected to allow for a much smoother transition from high school to college or university
6. What are the average class sizes
· The focus at Falcon is to provide a quality education and therefore class size is limited to 15 students per teacher (12 for nursery).
7. How is disciplined handled in the school.
· Each parent is provided a student handbook which contains all the rules and regulations for the school.
8. What grades levels are offered at Falcon?
· FIS currently offer Nursery though twelfth grade. Grades nine through twelve are offered using FIS staff for all course work except math, English, science and world history, which for this school year are provided through our educational partner, the Florida Virtual School.
9. Am I able to enroll my son/daughter mid year?
· YES, as an international school FIS is able to admit students during the school year. These students will be provided a placement evaluation and previous school transcripts will be reviewed to confirm grade placement.
